I never said that death and maiming were a requirement for us to get off of oil. Long ago on this thread I stated a very different position. I said that if I had been President on 9/12, I would have announced a several hundred billion dollar initiative to get us off the oil and an invasion of Afghanistan. Getting off the oil is the first and best thing we can do to change the Middle East, because if we rebuild our infrastructure to work on a different, cheaper, and more stable fuel source, then the world will follow and the ME will fall back into obscurity. I went on to say in that post that failing that, regime change in Iraq was a second best alternative. But the execution of that alternative has left quite a bit to be desired. That is what made me vote for Kerry.
