You are pretty damn naive. The three-fifths rule was a device used to convince Southern planters to come into the Union. The way it worked was that if a plantation owner held 100 slaves, he had sixty one votes in any election. Got that? He could vote for himself, and he controlled the vote of 3/5 of all the nigra slaves he owned. So he got 61 votes while you as a yeoman farmer busting the sod yourself got one vote.

Was that fair? Hell no! Was that democratic? Hell no! But it was the compromise that had to be made in order to get the South to join with New England in forming the original 13 states.
