Leftist Myth-Busting Thread posted by George T The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler Just for the continued education of the Loyal Citizens, I'd like to mention a quote that has the leftist anti-war whiners all a twitter. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism Thomas Jefferson I had this thrown at me in a leftist's thread a few weeks ago, and immediately Googled it. The quote is all over the web, with 9,370 Google hits . It's now a favorite of the left and features prominently on bumper stickers, right alongside "Free Tibet" and "Kerry/Edwards". However, the quote only dates back to July 3, 2002. Yes, the leftists are THAT stupid. Here is the original source, the first line of a Howard Zinn interview in the leftist rag TomPaine.com. <<< Howard Zinn: While some people think that dissent is unpatriotic, I would argue that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. >>> Excuse me if I fail to follow the leftists' thought process on this one. I guess since Howard Zinn is a Jefferson historian and his mouth uttered the now famous phrase, then it must come from Jefferson, despite the absence of cute little grammatical niceties like "Jefferson said, ____" and the funny little squiggly things commonly called "quotation marks". ? See sample. Urban legends has more on the debunking of this urban legend.urbanlegends.about.com The correct bumper sticker is here.carryabigsticker.com Dissent is the highest form of patriotism Howard Zinn The site says <<< We are offering two versions of this sticker. The original sticker that became a best-seller is still available below. The original version misattributed the quote to Thomas Jefferson. Our new version, shown above, correctly attributes the quote to writer and historian Howard Zinn. Note that these stickers are slightly different sizes. >>> *snort* Though the page clearly says the quote is NOT from Jefferson, leftists can still get "the original" sticker, which lets them put a blatant falsehood right on their bumper. For anti-war protesters, the Truth is at most an optional upgrade. They can just run with it like Ward Churchill's myth that the Army was giving Indians smallpox blankets (which was tried only once in American history, by British General Jeffrey Amherst, using only TWO blankets and a handkerchief), and the famous fake speech by Chief Seattle. At least the moonbats had the sense not to have Chief Seattle talking about Boeings...nicedoggie.net google.com tompaine.com carryabigsticker.com howardzinn.org tim.2wgroup.com synaptic.bc.ca www-formal.stanford.edu
