Mr. Kerry: Mr. Chairman, I realize that full well as a study of political science. I realize that we cannot negotiate treaties and I realize that even my visits in Paris, precedents had been set by Senator McCarthy and others, in a sense are on the borderline of private individuals negotiating, et cetera. I understand these things. But what I am saying is that I believe that there is a mood in this country which I know you are aware of and you have been one of the strongest critics of this war for the longest time. But I think if can talk in this legislative body about filibustering for porkbarrell programs, then we should start now to talk about filibustering for the saving of lives and of our country.

Brilliant statement by Kerry in 1971. Sounds like he should be president. What an articulate mind for a young man. He correctly surmised something many people are only now learning, that Vietnam was just a civil war, not an expansion by the Soviets. And therefore we had no valid reason to be there except perhaps as advisors or mediators.

Yes I see he went to Paris. I can understand how that might sound to certain "gung-ho" rightwing vets, but read his statement. It is absolutely right-on and brilliant. And remember, by 1971 most of the country was behind ending the war. It may be that Kerry as much as anyone, forced Nixon to run in 1972 on a "secret plan to end the war", and actually do it. That saved thousands and thousands of lives and got our POW's released early. By 1971 the war was unwinnable, FUBAR and the only option to try and win was a complete devastation of North Vietnam, though we'd already dropped more bombs than in all of WWII on the poor little country which was a huge national sin.

Back to the original point, the war was based on faulty assumptions, false rationales, the debunked domino theory and the "yellow peril" phobia. It was actually a civil war and we got in the middle. Only a minority in the US wanted us there, a minority who were deluded about why we were there and what the objective was. In fact by 1971 we had lost sight of any objective. So yes, this is proof Kerry went to Paris and met with the various delegations, but it also proves he was right, not to mention brilliant, and he was, by then, probably representing a majority of opinion in the US, at least amongst the younger generation for sure.
