Golf started out as a men only sport. It's taken some time for the men to come around.<g>

At our country club, Tuesdays are the only day when women have exclusive rights to the course in the morning, the prime tee times. This is because we are a private country club and therefore driven by a board of directors that is solely made up of men. The average age of the men on that board is 70.

The club is 78 years old. We still have a few original members left. The majority of the stock holding members is dwindling and the younger members, average age 53, are starting to make some changes for the better. There are only a hand full of stock holding members that are women. The women that are active in this club are now starting to voice their wants and needs and the husbands are listening. The old guard simply tolerated the women playing golf to a certain extent. The old guard wanted the women to stick with bridge or the Ladies Association and stay off their course.

We have a large WGA group at our club and it's growing bigger each year as we get in younger members. This past May, we had the biggest turn out in the history of the club for the WGA club championship.

It's been a struggle but it's been worth it and I thank and appreciate all the hard work the women golfers who made it possible for me to go out and enjoy the game of golf.
