In the case of Africa we are discussing cotton and/or sugar subsidies - not market/garden vegetables.

Cotton and sugar, for sure. The invisible hand will tell us what else. They certainly seem to think so, in an case.

Shipping costs are port costs. A couple of days more at sea make little difference in transportation costs. That is why the railroads were hated by the consumers when they first started out. It costs almost as much to ship from NYC to DC as it does to ship from NYC to LA. People can't understand this. Airlines have the same cost structure.
