The fight between israel and palestine is between two nationalisms and over land. This has transformed itself to an argument on whose side God is on as in all wars it seems. And that in turn has led to the horrors of suicide bombings and assymetric warfare. But bottom line it is a "national" dispute and thus solvable. In that sense its more like northern ireland than the al quaeda brand of interntational terrorism which must be totally destroyed.
So Hamas immersed in the daily issues of government as well as dealing with the hated israeli enemy is a small first step in a potential solution. Although i expect the israelis to continue telling abu mazen to jettison hamas in pubic, I suspect hamas participation is welcomed already by some even if for only reasons of realism(PA not enough power to give them the boot). The bigger short term danger to the peace process is islmamic jihad which as i understand it more of an iranian mouthpiece than hamas now is. It would be a good first step if both the PA and Israelis could play one off against the other by giving hamas a stake in the future and islamic jihad a stake in the heart. MIke
