Bob Dole and John Kerry both got Purple Hearts for minor wounds. Dole also got one for a major wound. Kerry also got one from a fairly serious wound (still has shrapnel in his leg from that). Max Cleland (also smeared by a Rove-orchestrated campaign) had three limbs blown off.

The point being, if you measure wounds to measure heroism, you soon run into sheer hypocrisy. If you single out war heros based on political party and attack the meaningfulness of one or another of their wounds, you are exposing yourself as the worst kind of partisan BS artist.

The smearvets campaignwas obviously dishonest and evil, but Dole should never have questioned Kerry's wounds. He too got a Purple Heart for a sliver wound which was quickly treated with a Bandaid and antiseptic. Remember though, silver wounds can kill. If they cut an artery or enter the heart you're KIA. And shrapnel doesn't descriminate. So Dole's sliver wound is something we should all respect. It could have killed him.
