I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think even a legitimate church can avoid taxes on property not used for religious purposes, such as commercial or other investment property. It can, however, make as big a profit as it is able in selling its downtown Atlanta church buildings and grounds to a commercial developer while it moves to the burbs and pays no taxes on the sale. ;-)
