Signals point to full-utilization rates at TSMC for 4Q

Cage Chao, Taipei; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 6 July 2005]

A month after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) raised its second quarter guidance, signals are coming from the foundry that it will increase its utilization rates to full capacity by the fourth quarter of this year, according to industry sources.

The sources stated that TSMC expects full bookings for 0.13-micron and below processes for the second half of 2005, and the foundry may not be able to completely meet demand. Utilization rates for 0.25- and 0.35-micron process technology at its 8-inch fabs are also expected to ramp up to full capacity in the third quarter, a recent report stated.

In addition, market sources have indicated that TSMC had discontinued some special discounts amid strong orders. Quotes for urgent 8-inch wafer on 0.35-micron node are priced as high as US$850, according to a recent report.

However, although IC design houses share a positive outlook for the second half of this year, they are still cautious and are waiting to see how the hot season shapes up before declaring a rebound for the industry, sources at design houses stated.

TSMC declined to comment on the news, and stressed that its third quarter guidance will be unveiled during its July 26 investors conference.
