The exiled leader of Tibet's Buddhists has said that if he dies before being able to return to his country, another will fill his place. Born into a peasant family in north-eastern Tibet on this day in 1935, at the age of four the Dalai Lama was selected to become his country's spiritual leader. Since 1959, his government-in-exile has been based in Dharamasala after crossing the Himalayas to flee Chinese rule. Direct ties with China were resumed in 2002, and the Dalai Lama's campaign to return to a democratic autonomous Tibet within China continues.
