Festivities mark Dalai Lama's 70th birthday

By Geoff Thompson in Dharamasala

Three days of celebrations have begun to mark the 70th birthday of the Dalai Lama in the northern Indian town of Dharamasala.

The exiled leader of Tibet's Buddhists has said that if he dies before being able to return to his country, another will fill his place.

Born into a peasant family in north-eastern Tibet on this day in 1935, at the age of four the Dalai Lama was selected to become his country's spiritual leader.

Since 1959, his government-in-exile has been based in Dharamasala after crossing the Himalayas to flee Chinese rule.

Direct ties with China were resumed in 2002, and the Dalai Lama's campaign to return to a democratic autonomous Tibet within China continues.
