Odds Maker Favors Gonzales For Supreme Court
Virginia Citrano, 07.06.05, 1:50 PM ET

NEW YORK - Doers and doings in business, entertainment and technology: Is nothing sacred? U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is the odds-on favorite to replace Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. So says Sportsbook.com, a unit of the London-listed online gaming company Sportingbet, which makes Gonzales the 6-5 favorite. His closest competition is federal Appeals Court Judge Emilio Garza, with 6-1 odds. "This nomination is already taking on the air of a U.S. presidential campaign," says Alex Czajkowski, Marketing Director, Sportsbook.com. "We’re thrilled to give our fans the chance to bet on the outcome." Judges Janice Rogers Brown, Edith Jones and Edith Brown Clement are next on Sportsbook.com's list, all tied at 8-1 odds. Appellate judges Michael McConnell, John G. Roberts and J. Harvie Wilkinson III are at the back of the pack at 10-1. O'Connor, the Supreme Court's first woman justice, surprised court-watchers last week by announcing her resignation; most had expected the retirement of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist to be President George W. Bush's first opportunity to place his stamp on the U.S. high court.
