IQ...

When I was in my thirties (long ago) I knew a kid who was a sophomore in High School. This kid would come and play chess with me during his lunch time. I saw him after school programming a fantasy roll playing game on an Apple IIe Computer. He always seemed to have a different, very fat, science fiction book that he was reading. After school he had a job slopping hogs.

I became concerned when I learned he was being tested to see if he qualified for special education services. His English teacher claimed he couldn't read 'Tale of Two Cities', he had flunked general math as a Freshmen and was failing it again as a sophomore, etc.

The tester later reported that the kid knew the answers on the tests better than the tester, who had given it many times.

So, because I felt I had some influence over him, I spoke with him one day about his future. It seemed he intended to drop out after this year. I complained that he would never be qualified to do anything better than slopping hogs. Guess what, he loved that idea... Who am I to suggest he should not?
