in the face of deep and broad opposition from the president's own political base I like Gonzalez. If I were Bush, I'd be thinking about the fact that I never intend to run for public office again, and that this is my chance to do something important for the American people. I'd pick the person (persons, it is likely to be) whom I thought would do the very best job possible. He doesn't need "the base", anymore. "The base" is a coalition of strange bedfellows. He doesn't have to dilute his convictions down to appeal to the lowest common denominator. He should aim high. In particular, anybody who thinks Bush is really a fundamentalist member of the Religious Right instead of a mainstream but conservative Methodist has swallowed the hype from DU and Moveon.org.
