I've been posting here for two years that --- in the longer run --- Iran would stand to benefit the most by the fall of Saddam and the Shia taking political power in Iraq....

Since there isn't a damn thing we can do to stop the process (other then changing sides and fighting WITH the Sunnis we are fighting against now...), possibly our *best* remaining option would be to remove ourselves from standing in the middle between the two sides... get the giant target off of our backs... and then let the inevitable civil war come.

The Sunni/Shia civil war would serve the same strategic American interests that it did in the Iraq/Iran Gulf War --- neutering the aggressive power of both sides, ultimately resulting in a Shia/Sunni/Kurdish partition of Iraq and, possibly, hopefully, ultimately resulting in the long-delayed 'Islamic Reformation' that is several centuries over-due, and the rejection of Saudi Sunni radicalism AND Iranian Shia radicalism.... ALSO much in the interests of the West.
