Read "Ghost Wars" by Steve Coll and you will find plenty of times when Muslims wanted to help us get OBL and his crowd for money or their own reasons. Re "religious war"; Bush's insane invasion of Iraq to get his family revenge certainly has made that prospect much more possible.
