michael97123, You can really be a nasty SOB unless you curb your tongue. It must be that the 97213 part of your user name, is your prison ID. What does the world look like from behind bars?

Reminds me of an old now deceased friend. He always claimed he graduated from NFU. That stood of course for Norfolk University. Pronounced southernly. (gg) jdn

Michael,

You and Mike really push each others buttons and should probably refrain from posting to each other :-)

What is Mike really saying?

That an all volunteer force serves at its own pleasure and terms. So anti-military or highly critical governance would create and/or hasten departures.

Your response was interpretted as - The military serves at the pleasure of the civilian government. And that these folks are patriotic and will serve anyway.

The reality is that the General Staff is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the civilian government. This does not apply to the rest, yes they can be drummed out, but they can also walk away at the end of their terms of service.

I got in a very heated argument with some co-workers from NYC not long ago along the same lines (started after a couple of disparaging remarks were made about the futility of military action and the stupidity of military leaders). After we took a minute (or five) to calm down I asked if any of them had children, siblings or relatives in the Military. None did. None of the them even knew anyone in the military although almost all had fathers who had served.

My argument against their decidedly anti-Military viewpoint was - why should my sons and their friends die to preserve your America? The America that most volunteers come from is conservative and votes overwhelmingly Republican (at least since it became all-Volunteer).

Now there are exceptions - and you will notice Chicago Mayor Daly is taking a much more pro-Military line lately now that he is a Marine father. He may be on his way to being a Scoop Jackson Democrat, unfortunately he wouldn't have many fellow travelers with which to build a base.
