They just want God in the process.

"All the observations concerning the development of life lead to a similar conclusion. The evolution of living beings, of which science seeks to determine the stages and to discern the mechanism, presents an internal finality which arouses admiration. This finality which directs beings in a direction for which they are not responsible or in charge, obliges one to suppose a Mind which is its inventor, its creator."

It's relatively easy to have God as part of the process without jamming him in there with the tortured logic of the 'design' argument. What a waste of time, trying to prove something that is completely a matter of faith. Not to mention the conceit of presuming to fathom His/Her/Its form and fashion. God doesn't bother me. Religion does.

The Catholic Church doesn't deny evolution. They just want God in the process.

Just so.

There are Catholics who take the fundamentalist position. One of the 19th century Popes was anti-evolution, one of the last "real" Popes if you're anti-Vatican II (like Mel Gibson's dad). We have our share of weirdos and whackos.
