Hey, that was well put, now if only that message could be brought out in the MSM. The easiest and best way to have the finest Professional Services would be to raise the Esteem level to that of a PRIEST or something. I know I joined the USMC for only one reason, I wanted to be looked upon as part of a "few good men". jdn

Pure illogic i am afraid. Folks arent joining or reupping because there is a perception that they are not being treated fairly, not because there is dissent. Look at the Guard and the Reserves. I understand your point but i profoundly disagree with your conclusion. The problem is that this volunteer army is running at 110% capacity for a year or two now and the situation in iraq is not perceived to be any better. You are right--we may need a draft and i am right--we may need to revise policy in the face of realities OR perhaps leaders who can explain the situation in a more honest and inspiring way so we can get new recruits and not lose the heroic folks who are doing the fighting now.

What do you mean by "kicking the box"?

BTW, cleaning out the basement, I ran across an old copy of "Your Conduct in Combat Under the Law of War," a pamphlet published by the US Army Combat Arms Training Board. I assume that it was distributed to all combatants?

Says stuff like "treat all captives and detainees humanely," "don't use coercion in questioning or interrogation," "attacks on the personal dignity of any captive or detainee, such as humiliation or degrading treatment is strictly forbidden by the law of war." Isn't that still the law?

Also says, "report criminal acts through your chain of command immediately" and "you cannot be ordered to commit a crime." That's still the law, too, right?

So when civilians express shock about members of the armed forces being ordered to engage in coercion, humiliation and degrading treatment of captives, that these orders were obeyed by some, that others did it voluntarily without being ordered to do so, and nobody reported it up the chain of command, why does that bother you?

I suscribe to the "one bad apple" theory. One bad apple can make the whole barrel of apples go bad, you have to remove it ASAP. Sure, it's only one bad apple, but you can't just leave it there.
