Photosynthesis is a process used by living beings. It's directed at the cellular level by feedback loops from the living being. At any rate, LB's definition isn't very helpful, but I think he recognizes that.

Here is an analogy I find interesting. The universe is going toward entrophy. Life is organizing energy, and doing the opposite. So life is swimming upstream in a river of entropy.
