Agree - the ability to have spreads and to hedge against both the underlying and other strike prices, as well as synthetic long and shorts at multiple strikes against the typical margin position should create trading volume similar to that of the underlying itself.

On a historical note - SPDRs themselves were dismissed as "not needed" when they were proposed - and dismissed as a "failure" when they only traded 250,000 contracts in their first week - checked the trading volume lately? :)
