Christ's true Church cannot be "split" anymore than Christ himself can be divided, for Christ and his Church are one body. the proper expression would not be to say that the Church split in 1054, but to say that the latins (roman catholics) left the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church of Christ in 1054.

Would you be happier with the word "schism". The schism didn't occur in 1054, it occured in 1453 when the Orthodox Church repudiated the Roman Catholic Church under pressure from the Muslims. You abandoned the true Church under the sword of the Muslims.
