I'll stand with Jefferson on this one. The issue in this case is the government using the press to go after a member of the general public to put a chill on criticism.

That has nothing to do with a free press and everything to do with abuse of power. The government can't hide behind the first amendment - that is a protection reserved for the People.

I consider Miller's conduct (not revealing her source) as inexcusable. She is no martyr for the First Amendment.

Ron, I recognize I might be out to lunch on the Judith Miller issue.

I admit to certain biases: I don't consider Miller a journalist - more a PR person for the Bush Administration - although I've tried to look past her obvious lack of integrity and consider her as a "reporter". Also, I think the leaker is a criminal.

I have two good friends that are journalists. I'm anxious to hear their views.
