Drudge has no credibility. Though he did out Isikoff's scoop on Monica Lewinsky before Newsweek would run with it, he batted a big fat zero in all 8-9 "scoops" he put out about John Kerry. Not a single one of them was true. In fact other journalists investigated some of them and found they were complete fabrications and that Drudge's "sources" didn't even exist. But Drudge never apologized or retracted any of it. It's very possible Drudge was operating as Karl Rove operative at the time.
