"For most people the issue is not "democracy" but prosperity"

I agree with you here. Most people will take a comfortable enslavement over an uncomfortable freedom. Some will not but I believe that they are only a tiny minority. This happens time and again and in everyday situations, not just national political ones.

For example, how many people toe the company or the boss' line everyday for decades? They don't like it but they want to pay the mortgage more than they want to speak their mind and risk the freedom of unemployment.

I'm just going a step further and saying that this is who we are as a species. We'd like to think that we're tigers but, in reality, we're the herd of zebras.

If you've read the Tipping Point, the author uses 150 as the number of individuals that can effectively and comfortably work as a unit. Maybe, but I don't think alienation is the problem. We are alienated from the mega corporations that manufacture our food but we're still highly motivated to make tons of decisions as to what we're going to eat.

Is food more important to us than political freedom? I would have to say yep. If political freedom were as important to us as food, we would have better and more varied choices.

How many people do you think can name their two senators and their congressional representative? Sadly, I see very, very few people rebel against oppression. If the majority of people did, we'd have a very different and much more interesting world.
