I did nbot say we had no periods of inflation or deflation. but that chart, (and it may well have problems as you say) seems to indicate that in the aggregate, inflation is as a continuos trend is a relatively new phenomenon in the US...

clealry my language " in the aggregate" was poorly conceived. there were periods of inlfation and deflation, but over the long term these resulted in very quiescent overall inflation, UNTIL the modern era...another graphic of this:http://www.comstockfunds.com/html/DebtCones.gif
