My theory is that in the late '60s early '70s liberals came to Oregon in droves to escape the tyranny of the U.S. buying up as much of the beautiful property as they could. Then they legislated laws banning growth to the extent that major companies weren't interested in coming due to these restriction and high taxes, thus keeping the growth of housing developments to a minimum and preserving their own little paradise on earth. They tried to stop logging up the Umpqua River, which didn't work, but they also drummed up enough support to stop a hydro electric dam on the same river, which did work, and that is good imo. But if you go to Oregon to visit an old college buddy or spend time with the locals, you'll find that most of them are living the way most of us lived during the "revolution" of the '60s. They still smoke allot of pot, and still dress the way hippies dressed then. They still have long hair and a natural dislike for the "establishment." They are still growing large veggie gardens because most of them are vegetarians or adhere to macrobiotic diets. They still burn incense in their homes, read Carlos Castenada, wear Petulie oil and get married outside under sprawling oak trees on farms in the summer. They still do make some awesome music and home made wine. They have filled their colleges and universities with liberal professors, and it seems like they all drive Volvos. In any event.....they've succeeded in growing some very radical children that have taken to heart the lesson that mankind is evil and destructive when it comes to the environment. M
