I used to think that people knew and did best for themselves, enlightened self interest and all, but I no longer believe this. There's too much evidence to the contrary.

I think people tend to do what makes them feel better, in the moment, than what is actually and objectively best for them. People do this all the time, in all kinds of situations from eating chocolate cake to spending the milk money to investing in risky stocks to voting for politicians.

The emotional, the kneejerk, the faith-based, etc. overwhelms our logic and makes us do the most inane and self-destructive things.
