They are going back from westernized dress to covering up. Not good.

A lot of peer pressure involved, not necessarily change from the heart.

Last week I stopped at my favorite place to get a shwarma sandwich, but sent Ben in to get the sandwiches while I sat in the car because I was wearing shorts and a sleeveless T-shirt.

Not that they wouldn't serve me, but I just didn't want to be disrespectful of their sensibilities.

I have a Muslim client (female, parents from Pakistan) who is very assimilated but her ex is not. The latest is that she wants to move out of the extended family home and live with a guy without marrying him, but wonders if that will have a negative effect on her custody case.

The answer is yes -- in Va., judges don't want to see custodial mothers OR fathers cohabiting extramaritally.

It wouldn't be a problem if the ex didn't make it a problem, but the judges would rule the same regardless of whether the parties were Christian, Muslim, whatever, bad idea.

So it seems to me that it's hard to tease out kowtowing to the expectation of others from heartfelt conformity. Sometimes you go along just to get along.
