To finish my idea, after the edit window closed.

Modern times demand that a modern culture be able to tolerate ambiguity and contradiction.

I would argue that true modernity also demands the ability to tolerate tremendous differences within the population, which is simply a restatement of the old "melting pot" argument for American culture.

The article by Bork you posted a couple of days ago argues that our society began to disintegrate when "outside elements" which were not Anglo-Protestant began to creep in.

I would argue that Bork is wrong, wrong, wrong. The amazing glory that is America rests on the assimilation of non-Anglo, non-Protestant cultures into/along with Anglo-Protestant culture.

We do it, and nobody else does it like we do. And we're the best. Don't mess with success.

(Er, sorry, hope I didn't get carried away.)
