"Taking a lower profile"

I agree that getting the targets off of our backs would be a *good* thing... but I doubt sending our guys out into the desert (thus: abandoning the cities) would make any military sense.

"and having some places to land our planes and deploy from would be good."

Not much problem of that if we keep the dozens and dozens of "permanent" bases we are spending Billions to build in Iraq. (The largest collection of US bases outside of the US, anywhere in the world....)

"I never have liked begging the Saudis for landing rights when problems arise."

No need to beg... if we ally with the Iraqi Shiite / Iranian military axis, we won't be getting any favors done for us by the Sunni-ruled nations like the Monarchs in Saudi Arabia. (Saudi Arabia has a pretty big minority Shiite population... very inconvenently located mostly in in oil-bearing regions ajacent to Iraq's Shia Gulf area.)
