"Hey, guess that would make us the POWER BROKER. hehe."

That, or the fool....

I believe toppling Saddam, and toppling the Taliban, at a cost of some 1/2 Trillion dollars was appropriate in an attempt to re-shape the Middle East.

But I also believe that we have now reached a point of sharply diminishing returns, and that our very presence is both forestalling the ultimately necessary shake-out of Iraq into more rational and sustainable nations and borders... and also leaving us in the middle with a big target painted on our backs.

Expenditure of a *SECOND* half Trillion of borrowed money at this point would be money-down-the-drain... wasteful to an extreme and ultimately self-defeating.

(Iran and Saudi Arabia fighting each other over the spoils of Iraq would be very harmful economically in the short-run... but would be extremely beneficial to US interests in the LONG RUN. It would effectively mark the start of the end of the 'War on Terrorism' --- with the West the winner --- as the most radical of Islamicists would be turned against each other... and ultimately, the centuries-overdue Islamic Reformation would happen. Corrupt and repressive and un-democratic regimes would fall throughout the region.)

The way to victory is to get out of the way of the inevitable, and let history happen.
