Fujimori plans a "comeback cola" in Peru

LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - His fans hope it will be the "comeback soda" for Peru's "comeback kid."

Supporters of former President Alberto Fujimori (news - web sites) -- who plans to run in 2006 elections despite being exiled in Japan, wanted for murder and barred from holding office until 2010 -- aim to launch a soft drink called Fuji-Cola to help fund his campaign.

"People will associate the drink with all the good feelings they have about Alberto Fujimori. It's a creative way of helping to finance his campaign," Fujimori spokesman Carlos Raffo said.

Fujimori fled Peru in 2000 when a huge corruption scandal ended his 10-year rule and is wanted on charges of ordering murder and torture. Japan, his ancestral homeland, recognizes him as Japanese and has refused to turn him in.

He denies wrongdoing and still enjoys support among Peru's poor, who remember him as a leader who built schools, tamed inflation of 7,600 percent and ended leftist rebel violence. Polls show he is one of Peru's most popular politicians.
