What do you wear under YOUR robe?

From the Supreme Court trivia page,

17) Who was the first justice to wear trousers under his robe?

Roger B. Taney (sworn in 1836).

Might be a trick question? Didn't men used to wear kneepants and stockings during the Revolutionary War days?

Taney was justice for a very long time, died in office 1864, the day his home state of Maryland abolished slavery. Maybe not a coincidence, he was very pro-slavery, wrote the Dred Scott decision that was one of the key factors in causing the Civil War.

At any rate, I assume that the fashions changed while he was in office and men started wearing trousers instead of kneepants.
