Intel has been pushing their position the best they can for many years now

What pushed AMD into the current response was some direct targeting by Intel. While AMD was in the transition from it's 32bit Athelon to it's 64 bit archetecture it had to bridge the crossover in demand. During this time microprocessor sales are low (32 bit drops as people wait for 64, and 64 bit isn't yet in volume). AMD was dependant upon flash memory sales for income. Intel began selling flash at below cost in an effort to put AMD into bankrupcy or perhaps force them to cease building their fab before the 64-bit chips were hitting their stride. Predatory pricing is a component of antitrust.
