(SMY: TSX), an international provider of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) hardware solutions, today opened the door for RFID smart label printer/encoders and other devices to read and write to EPC Generation Two (Gen 2) tags with the introduction of the new SAMSys MP9311 RFID UHF Reader Module. The MP9311 is the first commercially available RFID UHF embedded reader module that supports the new Gen 2 tags. It also supports the full array of first-generation tag protocols and global frequencies for use in all tag environments and geographies, greatly simplifying product development and stocking requirements for OEMs. The new module is designed for embedded RFID applications in barcode printer/encoders, smart label applicators and other devices requiring RFID capability. It has a footprint of just 2.75" x 3.75" - significantly smaller than its predecessor - and has already been adopted by several of the leading RFID printer vendors based on its combination of Gen 2, multi-protocol and multi-regional support. In addition to Gen 2 tag standards, the MP9311 supports EPC Class 0 and 0+, EPC Class 1, ISO 18000-6A, ISO 18000-6B, Philips UCODE 1.19, EM 4222 and Intellitag protocols. This makes it possible for organizations to read/write to Gen 2 tags and legacy RFID UHF tags concurrently. The new module is available in both North American (-N) and World versions (-W). Both are compliant with all respective regulatory regulations. The module will join the SAMSys MP9320 multi-port reader as the first products in their class to support EPC Gen 2 technology. The MP9320 is already being used by Gen 2 tag suppliers such as Texas Instruments to test their own Gen 2 tags as they come off the production line. It has also been approved for use in the U.S. Department of Defense's RFID supply chain initiative, based in part on its support for the Gen 2 standard. "Both our MP9320 reader and MP9311 reader module address the need for organizations implementing RFID programs to have Gen 2 technology in place for rapid migration to the new protocol," said Cliff Horwitz, chairman, CEO and president of SAMSys Technologies Inc. "Being first to market with Gen 2 reader products that support various global regulatory requirements, and which thereby reduces inventory risk and simplifies deployment, further positions SAMSys as the RFID reader supplier of choice for end users and device manufacturers worldwide." The MP9311 reader module is currently in beta testing with OEM customers and will be released for general availability on July 30. OEM volume discounts and an MP9311 Developer's Kit are available. The reader is also covered by SAMSys' 'TruBlue Gen 2' Assurance Plan, ensuring full interoperability with EPC Global and ISO compliant UHF RFID tags.
