But if 5 to 7% of iPod buyers eventually buy a Mac, then Apple's market share will continue to increase as it has been increasing for the past three quarters now.

Allen, sorry for the delayed reply but I have to say that even 5% would translate to approx 250-300k units/qtr and I clearly don't see that. Also, it's one year the pro pundits and hyping analysts have been calling for the coming of the halo effect, and while there have been some switchers, these units are probably lost in the noise. Clearly, other than a handful of newcomers to the Mac platform, the halo effect is an over expectation and doesn't seem to be making the impact some have proclaimed would take place. Let Apple lower the price of the PMacs by 20% and they'll sell tons. Let Apple boost the performance of the iMacs and PBooks by 50% and they'll sell tons. Both of these options are clearly impossible for Apple to do unless they're willing to give up massive or all their margins on the PMacs, and boosting iMacs' and Pbooks' performance is currently an impossibility with the current crop of processors Apple has to choose from. Hence, and I say again, Apple's move to Intel processors. This Intel move is not all about price but it's perhaps the biggest reason of all.
