About the past catching up...it is true that there is no escape, but that does not mean that the price paid has to be in blood. People reconcile their differences all the time, but it does require an understanding of the issues and admission of guilt. The best example of this was "Truth and Reconciliation" in South Africa.

Pinocet is still alive and going through his trials in Chile. I saw him on BBC a few weeks ago, but can't remember the news.

There is an old saying, "tell me who your friends are and I'll say who you are". It is amazing that so many Americans believe US is the champion of freedom around the world while still courting people like Pinocet, Saddam, Saudi Prince Abdullah, etc, etc. Is it surprising that the people of those countries do not share such a rosy view of US?
