Rehnquist says he's `not about to announce my retirement'

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - An ailing but resolute Chief Justice William Rehnquist, attempting to put to rest the "unfounded" rumors of his imminent retirement, announced in a statement late Thursday he will remain on the court as long as his health allows.

"I am not about to announce my retirement," said Rehnquist, 80, in a statement released Thursday night by his family. "I will continue to perform my duties as chief justice as long as my health permits."
