The politics of personal destruction is a finely honed process. What you propose requires a fundamental change in behaviors. It can start with either candidates or with voters. We would have to reject candidates that engage in character assassination to make the shift you propose.

With the mud slinging that a candidate must endure, why would a person on high standards submit to it? Instead you end up with dolts who prove the old adage: "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can't teach work for the government; those who can't work for the government run for office."

I used to think there was a huge difference between the parties. After 40 years out of power, Republicans had to learn to act like they were different to get into power. Once there they have proven to be as bad with budgeting as Democrats. Which is another way of saying that you made a valid point when you said: "There is so little difference between the two parties, that people are caught up with names."

When you said of AS: "There is so little difference between the two parties, that people are caught up with names." You might have been writing about John Kerry as well.
