It is historic. If you look at the end of last season and how this season has started, it is even more remarkable.

"With hurricane Emily being upgraded to a cat-3 major hurricane this afternoon, we are almost in uncharted waters....

During the period 1851-2004.....during that 154 period of record, I can only find seven (7) major hurricanes occurring during the month of July (hurricanes which reached cat-3 during July)...

July 1909 (cat-3....100 kt/ 959 mb)
July 1916 (cat-3....105 kt/ 948 mb)
July 1916 (cat-3....105 kt/ 972 mb)
July 1926 (cat-4....120 kt/ n/a)
July 1936 (cat-3....100 kt/ 964 mb)
July 1961 "Anna" (cat-3....100 kt/ 972 mb)
July 1996 "Bertha" (cat-3....100 kt/ 960 mb)

Seven major hurricanes in 154 years....and I have serious questions regarding the true intensity of several of these. For example, all research data I've seen EXCEPT Unisys shows 1961 hurricane Anna to be about 100 MPH....or 85 kt. The July 1936 hurricane which struck the Florida panhandle may not have been as intense as cat-3.....not based on available data I've seen. Even if these were cat-3's, they were IMO "barely" major hurricanes......BEFORE 2005, only 1 Atlantic basin hurricanes of record during July exceeded 105 kts. Now we're about to witness two 110+ kt July monsters in less than 10 days.......IMO two cat-4's in less than 10 days (compared to ONLY ONE cat-4 during the previous 154 years combined Surprised

We are also on the cusp of another all time record. Never before in recorded history have six named storms occurred in the Atlantic basin before August 1st. If the intensifying area of disturbed weather 1200+ miles east of the Leeward Islands becomes a tropical storm tomorrow (7/15) or Saturday (7/16), we'd already have SIX named storms.....with another two weeks before August to add to the record.

We are living in amazing times regarding the tropical Atlantic basin and hurricanes......witnessing and living history.......as we enter uncharted waters into the future"
