they want us to bring in 30 to 40 trees with roots attached and lay them horizontally all along the bank. Anchor them down, by drilling into the river bed as far down into the earth as we can, with a device that has wings that will spring if there is pressure on the trees from flooding and fill in with branches, rocks, logs, dirt and whatever natural thing we can find, then slope the bank towards the river. The idea is that the trees will deflect the main thrust of the flooding river while at the same time allowing sediment deposit from erosion up river.

We don't have any other choice, so will probably give it a try.
