They're the suckups who always descend on the professor at the end of class, in a desperate attempt to convey how much they know and smart they are.

Depends on the professor, but most seem to enjoy the intellectual stimulation of molding young minds, also having new cadres of uncompensated labor to send to the law library to "sub and cite" (check law review articles for substance and accuracy) and do "directed research" (aka help the professor write his book).

Being interested in what the professor thinks (aka "sucking up") does help get a better grade. JMHO.

Good practice for sucking up to judges and senior partners.
