I don't think it's good for anyone to pay as much for real estate as people have to in many American markets right now. It means young people cannot buy homes, and in some places people are spending way over 50% of their incomes just for mortgages. This is not a healthy trend for societies in general. It is also happening in Ireland--young couples have to save for five years on average to afford a downpayment. This often delays childbearing and has other huge impacts on family life.

This is a comment on real estate prices, not any kind of suggestion that avian flu is anything but horrible and tragic. And I am much more concerned about human lives being lost than bird lives.
