During the years when the Constitution was being framed, nearly all the citizens were Christians. In spite of that fact, the Constitution framers had the vision and the forethought that mixing religion with politics would not augur well for a nation. They had been through a horrible experience of religious persecution causing them to flee to the US. And they realized that it should "Never again..." hence they proceeded to enshrine that value in the Constitution.

Now the US is comprised of multitude of religions. And for those who say that the appointment to a public office should be based on how good a "Christian" a person is, is utterly foolish.

Terrorism can be effectively dealt with if we do not play the same game of "religion" that the Muslim fundamentalist have engaged in.

IMHO.

Everyone knows what rightwing Christian means. It means that neighbor or cousin of yours who loves Bush-Cheney, but doesn't care about Bush-CHeney-Rove-Delay's unethical behavior, war, poverty, pollution, gas gouging, honesty or corruption. The ones with the unhappy repressed sexless marriage to whom you can't mention the word "sex" or they freak out. The one who later becomes an alcoholic once reality crashes apart their unrealistic belief system. At least that's my born again cousin.

But you're right, I suppose we could use "rightwing fundamentalist". Believing that the Bible or the Koran or whatever book is the literal truth is what gets religious extremists in trouble to begin with. And frankly, I see little difference between one religious extremist or another. It's all ungodly because they lose their own ability to think rationally, and forget the #1 most important thing - LOVE.

Imo to focus what what helps or does not help a political party is the wrong way to go ... better to focus on what is right and what is wrong and let the chips fall where they may.

There is entirely too much gamesmanship in modern politics.

While I don't consider the fact that a person is a christian to be a negative, imo it is a fact that many christians consider being a jew, muslim, wiccan, devil worshipper, hindu, pagan, sihk, bahai, buddhist or atheist to be a negative.
