>>The "time delay factor" keeps stretching out further and further. Used to be "they'll buy next quarter", now it's out to "they'll buy next year". Apple is recovering nicely from a terrible hole it dug for itself a few years back. As yet, I'm with Orion, there is no evidence at all for a halo effect yesterday, today or tomorrow.<<

Nobody ever said that the halo effect meant that people who buy an iPod one quarter will buy a Mac the next quarter. And please don't misunderstand what I've recently said. I didn't say there would be a lapse of a year. What I was saying was that new sales would probably occur over the course of a year.

People generally buy new computers when they feel they need new computers. The halo effect wouldn't affect the timing of computer purchases, but it might influence a person's choice of computer when the time comes.

There is evidence for the halo effect in the fact that Mac sales are increasing at a rate faster than that of the PC industry at large, and in the surveys that have been conducted by third parties. You can choose to disregard the surveys, and you can also choose to say that Mac sales are increasing for some other reason. That's up to you. I choose to believe that there is a halo effect.

PS: Don't forget about the Pitchfork Effect. That's the effect of rampant viruses, trojan hosrse, and spyware on Windows, driving users to look for alternatives.
