There is absolutely no one who posts at SI who cannot afford free range meat, which is readily available almost everywhere in America,

But not where I live. We have only one grocer, and they don't carry free range meat. And before you say go a few miles down the road, keep in mind that a few miles down the road from here is an all day trip with a $40 ferry ticket at the end of it.
