You are talking two different things. Monitoring a group because you believe they might be promoting terrorism is one thing. I agree with that.

Singling people out in a line of people flying to NYC from London because they fit a particular description is racial profiling. Aside from the fact that its an indication of racism, its a rather stupid approach to solving the problem.

Okay, allievo. With the first one, a group has been identified as a potential terrorist threat based on information received. You monitor that group to determine who might be the potential terrorists and prevent them from completing their plans. That's considered doing a good job of surveillance.

With the second, you see someone who looks Muslim or whom you think looks like a terrorist and you arrest them. That's called racial profiling. It assumes that because someone is Muslim or looks like a Muslim that they are likely to do something bad. Its also a form of racism. Just like its a form of racism to assume that because someone is black they will steal something, or because they are Latiño, they can't speak English. You make a decision about a person.....often a negative one........based on their ethic or racial background.
