On winning and losing in Iraq. If the coalition leaves Iraq tomorrow, the losers are the Iraqis. They will have been given the opportunity to develop a democratic secular society, and if they descend into anarchy following a coalition withdrawal they will have themselves to blame, and the end sufferers for what will result will be primarily them, not the coalition members that will largely return to their families and BBQs and golf games in their peaceful home countries. Using Vietnam as an analogy, after the US pullout the Vietnamese went communist, and the USA is the economic and military leader of the world whereas Vietnam is one of the few SE Asian countries which is NOT experiencing dramatic economic success = the losers, them, not us. By removing Saddam Hussein from Iraq, the majority of the coalition's self serving objective has been achieved. The current campaign to stabilize the country has much more benefit for Iraqis (if successful) and minimal benefit to coalition members (in comparison to leaving tomorrow and halting the loss of coalition life). That's one view.
