I think Cuba is an excellent comparison, except that Cuba is 90 miles from Miami and would be a major US tourist destination but for our policies. My father went to Cuba in the '50's when Batista, the Mob and United Fruit ran the place, and set the stage for the communist revolution there. The policies still exist because of the large Cuban/American population - we don't have any corresponding N. Korean population. We haven't really tried to engage either country.
